I have enjoyed years of working with you and I have enjoyed our shoots, putting together magical images, and seeing your enjoyment from the fruits of my labor.

I wanted, however, to bring up something that needs to be shared. As many photographers do, I have image coded each photograph I have ever taken. Those images are uploaded into a database, and it tracks where those photos, no matter how cropped, altered, or renamed, are used.

Out of curiosity, I opened this database report, and I was surprised to see that in over eighty percent of those usages, I was not given photo credit (www.glennbrogan.com or www.beyondpairadice.com), which is part of our contractual agreement.

I am very glad that you enjoy the images we take together enough to post and share them on the internet and I hope that you will continue to share them. However, when the subject fails to give photographer credit, it is much like bootlegging a CD for your friends of an artist you like. The photographer loses both a possibility to improve their exposure, as well as the potential future business due to an uncredited photograph.

Please, in your photos, credit your photographer, no matter who it is. And photographers as well, credit your subjects. If you have any questions, please contact me: copyright@glennbrogan.com

Fall Hiking in Utah and Arizona, Part Four

Page Arizona & Southern Utah, Sunday, Balloon Regatta and the Wave: Day Four, the last of this trip found me waking up at Bashful Bobs Motel in Page, Arizona pre-dawn looking for a few good locations to capture the mass ascension of the Balloon Regatta at sunrise throughout the town. After the Seventy-Plus Balloons took flight, I headed out to conquer "the Wave". The Wave is a beautful sandstone formation with color banding throughout in horizontal patterns. This was a very peaceful and isolated hike with no markings along the way and was a challenge for me (especially after the last three days of constant hiking), but this was truely the best of the hikes in the reward of it's powerful and intense beauty. Fall Hiking in Utah and Arizona, Part Three

Southern Utah, Saturday, Grand Staircase Hoodoos, Lower Antelope, Horseshoe Bend: The third day of this four day journey started outside of Kanab, Utah applying for a permit (through a lottery system) to the Wave for Sunday. I was drawn, and then headed for some Hoodoos in Grand Staircase National Monument. The formations and landscape were breath-taking to say the least. After about an hour of hiking and shooting, it was time to head toward Page, Arizona and Lower Antelope Canyon. Lower Antelope is just amazing! Impossible to describe, but images help. :) From Antelope, I went to Horseshoe Bend, along the Colorado River by Page, Arizona. This is a cool location and I wish I had a wider lens to do it justice, but I think I got a good image to show off it's 1000-foot drop to the river below in a nice horseshoe shape. That evening, I reserved a Motel room in Page, Arizona and didn't realize that the 7th Annual Balloon Regatta was happening that weekend! There were 26 Hot Air Balloons lining the main street in Page for a spectacular Balloon Glow! I talked with a few of the Balloonists and found out that they were planning a Mass-Ascension in the morning with over 70 Balloons! More on that in Part 4. Until then, enjoy!

Fall Hiking in Utah and Arizona, Part Two

Zion, Friday, the Subway: after the previous day's hike in the Narrows, I felt prepared for "the Subway". This hike is definitely more challenging than the Narrows, and actually was the most difficult hike I have ever done. On the way to the trailhead, there was a still pond that provided some spectacular reflections of some Fall foliage against a Mesa background. That was a serene and tranquil moment before the 3 hour intense journey to the Subway. The trail starts with a 500-foot descent to the creek, followed by multiple creek-crossings and a ton of scrambling to get to the final part of the trail which is where the rewards are. There are three spectacular sights at the end of the trail: the Cascades, the Crack, and the Subway itself. Here are a few images from this intense but worthy hike! ...enjoy :)

Fall Hiking in Utah and Arizona, Part One

Zion, Thursday, the Narrows: the morning started with a shoot for a Fine Art series that I am working on with the talented Rom from St. George right outside of Zion in Springdale. The location was perfect for the vission I had and the shoot went exactly as planned. Then I suited up for a 6 hour trek up the Narrows in the Virgin River to "Wall Street". The hike was not nearly as difficult as the following days would be (the Subway and the Wave being the most difficult), but was a good start to wearing me out! The water was 52 degrees and the protective clothing didn't keep out the cold, or the water for that matter, but the scenery was spectacular and the experience was life-changing.

Sometimes we all need a friend. yesterday was a day that I was feeling some serious stress from some things that are going on in my life and I just wanted to get away from everything for a bit and do something to give me a "calgon moment". For me getting away means going to work, so to speak, and just feeling free with a camera in my hand and a subject to shoot. Fortunately I found a great friend in a model named Andrea and she agreed to get up early on a Sunday and do a shoot with me "just because" at a location that actually didn't work out too well, so we improvised and went to a closeby park and just worked with what we had. The highlight for me was seeing Andrea in this amazing dress and heels on a swing just smiling and having fun. A cool sidenote to this shoot is we were just joking about the fact that she was in this beautiful dress and heels just swinging in the park and how odd that is, when a young girl came into the playground area in a dress and heels and began to swing while we were shooting. It was a great day and I thank you, Andrea for making it so!

It is with great excitement that I announce the beginning of GlennBrogan.com, my new website that will cater to Families, Weddings, Maternity, H.S. Seniors, and Fine Art Prints. BeyondPairadice.com will still exist, and will evolve into a more commercial and edgy site, promoting Models, Concerts, Events, and Photo Projects that I come up with now and again. This blog will be the connection between the two sites and the keeper of my sanity with the dividing of two "personalities" of my work! This affects the blog for some followers, as the original address is: www.beyondpairadice.blogspot.com but I was using a forward to point www.glennbrogan.com to the blog until the site was ready to go live. Here we are, a few months ahead of schedule, and I am ready to launch the real site that is www.glennbrogan.com. For the concept, I had an idea that involved a pool (it was a hot week) and 2 models in bikinis :) The original location didn't work out because of power lines that would be in the shots, so one of the models kindly volunteered her backyard pool for a location and I am glad she did! Favorite Image of the Week, part two

Part 2 of the Favorite Image of the Week showcases the second shoot I did on Saturday. This session was in the evening and was at Basic H.S. We were able to use the football field and bleachers which was the perfect location, as she is on the Dance Squad and also a Cheerleader. Cindy (her mom) was on hand again to help out and I definitely appreciated it :) I had a long and busy day on Saturday, but loved every minute of it! Enjoy.

Favorite Image of the Week, part one

As a photographer, I often find myself at a loss for words, so posting images is hindered by my lack of writing. Seriously, I stress about what I should write and this results in fewer image posts... so I have decided to start a weekly (hopefully) tradition called the "Favorite Image of the Week". I will post an image or collection of images and then write briefly about why the image(s) was chosen, and maybe a little about the shoot of concept of the Image.

This week, I want to start with some current work, so the images are from a H.S. Portrait Session that happened this past Saturday morning! It was a fun shoot in Henderson, and actually... that evening I had a session with her older sister (look for those images soon). The concept was simple, bring out her personality and style in an environment that she felt comfortable in. She is a Softball player and a Cheerleader so we wanted to showcase those looks along with her personal style. She was awesome to work with and her mom was more than willing to assist with the shoot (thank you Cindy). Here are a few images for you to enjoy.

I love what I do!... Family Portraits!

This weekend I headed up to Mount Charleston to do a Family Portrait with a great and existing client of mine. We met up at the Upper Lee Meadows and before we started shooting we were fortunate to witness 3 beautiful wild horses grazing in the early morning light. We found a few locations to shoot at and I love the images that came out from this session! It is an honor for me to think that we started working together when they were expecting their daughter almost 4 years ago, and now it's amazing to see her walking and talking and full of energy and life (this session found her with "smiles for miles"). I would love to personally thank you very much for braving the cold weather (it was in the 40's up there in the morning) and for your loyalty to me as your photographer over the years! Zion National Park, my first trip :)

A week ago I had the pleasure of visiting Zion for a few days and nights for my very first time. This was also my Daughter's first trip to Zion and her first camping trip. Even though it was a little warmer than I expected, it was a great trip and I plan on returning in September to do the "Narrows" until my feet freeze off! Some of my favorite locations were "Weeping Rock" and the "Emerald Pools". My daughter is a budding photographer and she didnt seem to notice all of the hiking because of how majestic the surroundings were. I did venture up a few bends in the Narrows with my Daughter, but didn't make it to "Wall Street" or "the Subway" this trip. If you are in the area, and haven't had the opportunity to visit Zion yet, I definitely recommend it! Walking Box Ranch Images

A few weeks ago I was given the opportunity to shoot at "Walking Box Ranch", and of course, I accepted! Walking Box Ranch was the former getaway for Clara Bow and Rex Bell in the 1930's, and currently there are plans for a huge restoration project at the site. From above the Vegas Skyline on a Sunday evening...

I decided to go to Lone Mountain and climb up to view the City from above. It was a full moon weekend and Sunday was my first opportunity to get away and just watch the Sunset and Moonrise above the City of lights. The hike was intense but well worth every wheeze as I found a nice ledge to sit down andd watch the ultimate Mother (Nature) do her thing to the Valley below. Of course I had my camera with me, and decided to attempt some Panoramics. I shot some taht were 9 images wide and some that were 22 images wide later that night, but the one that is included here is a 13 image Panoramic stitched together in Photoshop CS3. I can say that viewing it here compared to full size on my computer screen or better yet, from above the Valley on the Mountain is NO COMPARISON, but I am trying to share :) Have a great week!

With the weather as perfect as it has been in Las Vegas lately, I decided to work out by the pool in my "Luxury Apartment" complex. I grabbed my laptop and headed for a cabana to get some work done and almost instantly it came to me... Photoshoot at the Pool! I envisioned eyes just barely out of the water, reflecting on the surface, and many other shots in the pool area. Since I had a lens die in the mddle of a shoot out at Lake Mojave with a model, I felt it only fitting to invite her back for a re-shoot with me. Her name is Crystalina, and she is the most sweet and beautiful model I have worked with in awhile. Her personality is just stellar and her sense of humor is twisted, so we got along just fine! Below I have added just a few images from this shoot, but plan on creating a gallery just for her on my Beyond Pairadice Studios site in the very near future! We have plans coming up to incorporate her beauty with an amazing natural landscape during a full moon in the next month, and I hope this is the first few of MANY shoots with her! She is very professional and a true pleasure to work with!

New Gallery at Beyond Pairadice Studios site... "The Dreaming... Live at the Cheyenne Saloon"

A new gallery has been added to Beyond Pairadice Studios featuring my absolute favorite band, The Dreaming. This show was at the Cheyenne Saloon on December 13th, 2008. The venue had really poor lighting and the band added a strobe box on the stage, causing quite a challenge for photos, but I was able to overcome this with a 50mm lens that has a 1.8 f-stop (for dark situations). The concert was amazing because the band played an extended set that included quite a few Stabbing Westward songs (for those not in the know, the lead singer was the frontman for Stabbing Westward). I wish smaller venues would invest just a little bit in lighting. I think the bands and the fans would both benefit from the modest investment, and it would also work in the venue's favor, with more bookings and a better reputation for being "the" venue. Even Wasted Space in the Hard Rock and the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay could stand to improve their lighting situation (and the HOB could also use an acoustics overhaul). Until next time...

A "NEW" Gallery has been posted at beyondpairadice.com. The majority of the images in this gallery were from my first "all digital" shoot in 2005 at Huntington Beach with a Canon 20D camera. The model, Emily, lives in California and met with me on a cool afternoon in October at the pier. I was in the process of refiling all of my images and came across this disc, and couldn't believe that I hadn't posted the images previously. Earth Day at Redrock... (and a Rant about Littering)

I decided midway through Earth Day to spend the afternoon at Redrock and just admire a small corner of the Earth on a day that is designated "special" for the planet. As I was hiking around and taking a few shots here and there, I thought about the dramatic planet changes that could be made if everyone just did a little bit each day for the Earth, like not littering! There wasn't a large amount of debris out at Redrock, but a candy bar wrapper here, a lid to a Gatorade bottle there, and cigarette butts seemed to be everywhere. I am the first to admit that I do not recycle, but... I do know what a trash can is and what it's main function is in our society. Here are a few images from Redrock, including a Ladybug (there were bushes full of them!), I hope you enjoy them... and use a freakin' trash can! Seriously!

Amazing Weather Changes in Vegas

The past few weeks have been crazy! One day it is 59, cloudy and windy... the next it is sunny and 75! It seemed to change dramatically every day! Last monday, I had a shoot with a great model that I have never had the opportunity to work with before, Crystalina at Lake Mojave for sunset. The weather was supposed to be 70-72 and sunny with a few clouds. When we arrived at the lake, there were dark clouds covering the sky and pockets of wind here and there, and the temperature was about 63. We still hiked to a private cove and began the shoot. The water was cold and the wind didn't make it feel any warmer, however, Crystalina never complained about it and as a result, I think we we able to get some amazing images! You tell me...

Taking a day for me...

Yesterday I decided to take an official "ME" day! For those of you that don't know me, this is a very rare thing. I parked my car at the New York New York Casino garage and walked for over 6 hours up and down the strip. Now it wasn't a true "ME" day because I did have my love with me (my camera) as she tends to go everywhere I go, but I actually didn't shoot a great deal of images, but more importantly concentrated on thinking and enjoying a nice breezy day in Las Vegas amongst thousands of strangers. Here you will see a few of the images I was able to get while down there. *note ~ the butterfly picture is REAL and from the Bellagio Botanical Gardens! If you get a chance, pay this season's display a visit... it is beautiful!

The Death Valley Experience 2009

This year's first trip to Death Valley was planned to be a 4-day excursion with about 16 fellow photographers from the Nevada Camera Club. Apparantly, someone forgot to mention this trip to Mother Nature and she decided to test us both individually and as a group. Within four days we saw hail, sun, rain, snow, dust devils, ... And wind, wind, wind! None of which deterred me from shooting what I wanted to and having a great time. On this trip I got to learn more about some fun people in the club and got to learn more about me... Both as a photographer and as a person. Here are a few of the images I was able to capture while being sandblasted by the wind. The waterfall is in Death Valley and is year-round! Enjoy.

Cathedral Gorge State Park and Pioche, Nevada

I heard about a park about 170 miles northeast of Las Vegas called Cathedral Gorge and a few days later I found myself on the road at 3:30am headed for it. This place is beyond words. The more you look, the more there is. It has three main sections named Moon Caves, Cavern Caves, and Cathedral Caves along with other areas to explore the countless slots (caves) within the gorge. Once you get over the external beauty and start exploring the inner slots it becomes apparent just how amazing and deep this park is. I have never seen such beauty and think this is my new favorite getaway from Vegas. Also close by is a small town called Pioche, some may think it is a ghost town, but there are actually people that still live there! It was known as a very rough town in 1870 and from talking with a few of the locals, it still seems to be a town full of characters! This series is from "The Dreaming" Live at the Icehouse Lounge on June 12, 2008. It was a small venue and had a small crowd, but that made it better for the fans that were there to see the band (and hang out a bit after the show and just b.s. and drink)! Chris Hall was full of energy even though the band's Van had broken down earlier on the way making them fashionably late for the show. I hope you enjoy the images as much as I enjoyed the show! "The Dreaming" will be playing again in Vegas on April 24th at the Hard Rock with Trust Company! I strongly recommend this show, and hope you will come out and support this band! I will be there, that is for sure!

The shoot was a few years in the making in getting costumes and thinking of a great location, but while driving down the 95 last Friday night, I saw a Ferris wheel. I immediately pulled off the highway and found the person in charge of the Carnival. We talked briefly about the shoot what I wanted to do at their location and he was very accommodating! I scheduled the shoot for Sunday morning and then came the difficult part... finding 2 models on extremely short notice and hoping they would fit the costumes and be able to pull off the shoot that I had envisioned. I immediately went to my favorite resource for models: Model Mayhem and started emailing models for the Sunday morning shoot. One model contacted me back right away and I asked her to help me find another model for the shoot. She texted me Saturday evening and said she had no luck and I was re-thinking the shoot and trying to envision how it would look with only one model, and then it also dawned on me that it was Daylight Savings time the morning of my shoot so there would be an hour of lost sleep. ***Panic***. Did I set my alarm clock right, and then at 1am The booked model texted me again with good news: there would be a second model for the shoot and as an added bonus, she was going to bring another friend to help with lighting! The second model booked within only 7 hours of the meeting time of the shoot and actually was the first to arrive on location (beating me by mere minutes), 15 minutes early. On top of all of that, it was a cold and windy morning, so I was unsure of how the shoot would turn out, however... 2. I found this video from a Nine Inch Nails show in Australia from THIS WEEK! it has an interesting camera perspective (from onstage) that I really love! Oh, and it was shot with a Canon 5Dii in full HD (yes a digital 35mm slr camera). Thus proving... Canon Rocks!

Planning yet another trip to Death Valley...

This time I plan on being out there for 4 days and 3 nights! Of all of the desert locations I have seen around the Las Vegas area, Death Valley is my favorite. From the sand dunes near Stovepipe Wells, to the drive through Artist's loop, and just the complete serenity at night when the sands shift with a gentle song and every star visible in the sky is there it seems... just for me. Waking up before dawn to capture the sunrise at Zibriskie Point is just as breathtaking as watching the sunset at Dante's View overlooking the entire valley below. This year I have invited members from the Nevada Camera Club to come out and share in the beauty. What I think will make this trip exceptional has to do with the amounts of rain that has fallen in Death Valley in the last few months. If predicted correctly, there should be an amazing bloom of wildflowers this year and hopefully they will be in full bloom during our four day visit. The reports from the Ranger's station say it should be a great year to capture fields and fields of wildflowers throughout the park and in the surrounding area! I have gone to the park many times in the last few years, but this year I am hoping to see parts that I haven't visited before. Instead of camping at Furnace Creek, I intend to camp at Stovepipe Wells so I can explore the Panamint Mining area and hopefully trek out to the Racetrack and other spots on the opposite side of the park. Of course, no trip is complete without a visit to Scotty's Castle and the closeby Ubehebe Crater. This Death Valley trip is a journey for me, a time to just reflect on life and enjoy all of its beauty. The peaceful and often desolate surroundings are a way for me to find a "moment of clarity". Seeing the night sky keeps me reaching for the stars... Seeing the jagged crystals that make up Devil's Golf Course reminds me of how fragile life is... and staying in the park, if only as a visitor for a short time, is the ultimate life experience for this Photographer. A long overdue update and big news!

Since my last posting, some significant things have been happening! A big step in my eyes, and the big news is that Beyond Pairadice Studios is now officially in the Perfect Wedding Guide! Please check out my page on their site and feel free to leave feedback! I am very excited about this as it is my first official ad and I look forward to it coming out in the Spring edition of the Perfect Wedding Guide.

I must apologize for not keeping this as current as I should. The lack of posting is mainly because I have been trying to meet some self-created goals, and somehow forgot to post, but that too will change as one of my NEW goals is to post at least weekly with the happenings of 2009. This will include updates to my Beyond Pairadice Studios site and this blog and eventually the Glenn Brogan Photography site (which I plan to have up and running by the end of the year). The images here are some of my favorites from some weddings I have recently done. Enjoy and keep checking back... I will be updating! :)

A Self-Family Portrait of Sorts...

This year, I decided to take some non-traditional self-portraits with my daughter while she is visiting with me. I love the Vegas sign and also found this mural on the side of a building that has the Strip in Grafitti that I thought would make for a great background. With the New Year here, i have been reflecting on what is important to me... Family! I hope you also have a great New Year and that all of your resolutions are fulfilled in 2009!

A Winter Wonderland... in Vegas!

What an amazing week of weather we have had in Las Vegas; we actually got snow a week before Christmas. I went to Redrock Canyon on Thursday and captured some snowy scenes in the desert. Taking the 13 mile scenic loop drive is always a beautiful experience and there is always something different that catches the eye, but seeing it with snow was simply breathtaking! The images here pale in comparison to what I was able to see, but I hope you will enjoy them! Happy Holidays!

In other news, we are right in the middle of the Mount Charleston holiday family portrait sessions, and from the weather forecasts today, this weekend there should be SNOW on the mountain! I added a date for the sessions at Mount Charleston, and I have 4 spots left for the season. On November 30th (this Sunday) i have 1pm and 3pm available, and on December 7th, I have 11am and 1pm available. They are first come, first serve! I will still be available to schedule portrait sessions in the valley, but will not be shooting at Mount Charleston again until next year. If you are traveling for the Thanksgiving Holiday, be safe!

Late Night Thoughts and Rambling...

While at Timbers (my favorite late-night food resturaunt) I started thinking about branding in the marketing sense. What's in a name? Beyond Pairadice Studios is the name I go by and it came out of many things. As the creator, I wanted to have something with a "Vegas" feel and it had to mean something to me. When I first moved to Las Vegas in 1997, I was in the casino industry during the night shift in a "Dice Pit" and doing my photography during the day. When I felt I was ready, I left the casinos to open my first actual studio in 2001. That is when Beyond Pair A Dice came to my mind as I was beyond working for someone else and on my own. Now I am working on a change that will give my studio a split personality. After thinking about the direction I want to be heading in, I have decided to also go by "Glenn Brogan Photography." This new brand will focus on Weddings, Family Portraits, H.S. Seniors, and Maternity Portraits. Beyond Pairadice Studios will be the wilder side of my photography to include Commercial, Concept, and Landscape photography and will continue to showcase the models that I work with. Family Portraits at Mt. Charleston... The Details

The holidays are fast approaching and to celebrate, I am offering a few special Family Portrait sessions at Mt. Charleston. It will be the perfect time to go to the mountain and enjoy the lovely scenery, grab some hot chocolate at the lodge, and get some family portraits done just in time for the holiday season. I will be offering this special chance to capture your family on the 15th, 23rd and 30th of November. Each day will only have 3 sessions (9 total) and each family will have a different location on the Mountain.

The sessions will last about an hour and will include an 11x14 gallery wrapped canvas print, two 5x7 prints and a proof disc with images that are perfect for emailing, blogs, and websites. All images will be ready in time for holiday cards, presents, or just to have before the Holidays. My normal rate for this package is $279, but I am offering this session to you for the reduced rate of $219. Payment plans are available, ask for details. In addition to the portrait session you may additionally choose holiday cards and prints for your family and friends. Family portraits are not only a source of happy memories but a great investment.

Catching up with Beyond Pairadice Studios... Fall Family Portraits

Things sure are moving fast this fall and I have been trying to keep up! I had the opportunity to set up a booth at Fall Festival last weekend and I have been spending some serious time preparing for it as it was my first booth ever. It was a successful event and I gained some valuable experience and hopefully a few more clients. I also have been busy with family portrait sessions as the Holidays are fast approaching. I have also been planning a Mini-Portrait-Safari at Mount Charleston in early November. This will be a limited opportunity for 4 families to have an "on-location" session close to home and also is an excuse to get out of the valley and get some Hot Chocolate at the Mt. Charleston lodge! A fun shoot with a HS Senior in Alaska

My very first assignment when I arrived in Alaska, was to shoot a HS Senior in Eagle River. I got my rental truck, got directions, and off I went from the airport to meet Bridget and her daughter, Victoria for the shoot. We briefly had discussed what they wanted over a great lunch prepared by Bridget (thank you), and then drove to the shoot location that had 2 beautiful horses. Once there, we began shooting and the weather actually cleared up as the shoot progressed. It was almost as if I brought some good weather up to them from Vegas. Victoria was a trooper and quickly relaxed and got into the "shooting mood" and just focused on what we were doing and I think that comes through in the images below. One thing I feel is very important is building a trust and a comfort level between the photographer and the subject. Although Bridget and Victoria differed on what would look good as a senior portrait, the end images came out beautiful. See for yourself....

This kid Rocks!

I thought i would share some images from a kid i know.... My Daughter! she is barely a teenager and has been shooting with a P&S camera for about 6 years and in my opinion (I may be slightly biased) has an AMAZING natural eye. Her framing and composition of shots is very refreshing and I am blown away when I see new images that she shares with me. She is a big fan of landscape photography and self-portraits. She will probably be getting her first Digital SLR this fall and I hope she will want to learn all of the "boring" settings and stuff so she can improve on her raw and great talent. My recent trip to Oregon and Alaska...

I must say that my trip was AMAZING! The scenery was so beautiful and working with some Fun and Talented people in the NW was great! I started by shooting with Katherine @ Cannon Beach during Sunset. She was beautiful and we were very fortunate to have a clear evening and a colorful sunset. When I got to Alaska, I hit the ground running with a Senior shoot with Bridget's Daughter and a fun horse! The next day, I worked with Joanna, Melissa, and Jody at Girdwood and Portage! The backgrounds were surreal and I think the Images will be just breath-taking! I was also able to Work with Joanna's family and her 3 grandsons! That was definitely a fun shoot with some portraits that I am sure they will cherish for years. The last shoot I did while in Alaska was with the Daughters of Shiva! for the shoot, we went to the Palmer Visitors center and Gardens and the Ladies worked it in front of some beautiful Flowers and a HUGE raspberry bush! All in all, it was an amazing trip and I look forward to visiting both places again and again and again! Thank you everyone for your support and if you missed out on working with me, be assured... paying homage to my true inspiration... my vision... literally

Between my lens and my mind lies my true inspiration... my vision. I am writing about my eyes. They allow me the privilege see the world and give my mind things to think about all of the time, yet sometimes I overlook their presence and significance to me and my life. I recently read an article about the eye and it's comparison to the camera in the digital world and I thought I would share some of this knowledge with you. I am not going to quote this article, but I will tell you where I got it, so you can read all of it for yourself, if you choose. It was printed in the August 2008 issue of "Popular Photography". Most of what I am going to talk about is based on photography, so if it sounds foreign to you, read up on what you don't understand ~ if anything it will help your photo-taking skills! Let's start with the ISO of the eye: in daylight the ISO rating is 1 and the max ISO for the eye at night is 800. This refers to the sensitivity of the eye. In comparison Film's lowest ISO is 25, and some digital cameras go as high as 6400 (we see better in the day and cameras have the huge advantage in the dark). Now let's talk Depth of Field: the eye has the equivalent focal length of about 22mm and a field of view of almost 180 degrees at its extreme; our eyes are capable of f/3.5 at wide open. Camera Lenses have the advantage here as the fastest lens available now is a f/1.2 and there are some crazy fish-eye lenses out there, but i am content with non-distorted vision, thank you. The final eye detail I will mention for now is the one I have wondered about ever since I heard about digital cameras and mega-pixels... Resolution: the eye has the resolution of 576 Mega-Pixels! That in itself is incredible, as the biggest camera i have seen on the market is pushing about 39 mega-pixels. This is telling me that we are just at the beginning of digital photography and I am looking forward to see where it goes. I hope this opened your eyes to the marvels of... the EYE.

A great way to spend the 4th of July!

I decided to spend the evening of the 4th of July out in the desert shooting. Lucky for me, I had 2 beautiful and willing models to work with: Britt and Andrea. We went out to a dry lake bed and started shooting by 6:30pm. There was a great deal of wind and it was blowing in the wrong direction, but we were able to make it work. As a reward, we were given a spectacular sunset as a backdrop for some of the shots later that evening! Etched in Blood ~ The Dreaming

On friday night I had the honor and priviledge to shoot "the Dreaming" (a very good up-and-coming band from LA) as they were playing at the Icehouse Lounge here in Las Vegas. One member of the band, Chris Hall, was the former frontman of Stabbing Westward (an incredible band from the 90's). The venue was pretty small but it worked out in my favor as I was able to get some very up-close and intimate shots of the band. Inspired, at Studio Ohm

My 2 favorite Belly Dancers, Britt and Marisa invited me to an evening of performances at Studio Ohm last weekend and without a doubt I went... with a camera (of course). The main reasons I went were to see Britt and Marisa perform and see their students perform as well. To my surprise, the performances were not just of belly dancers, but included a wide variety of dancing and an amazing percussion finale! I had a reserved seat (thanks girls) in the front row and was supposed to come and enjoy myself and not work (take pictures), but how could I not bring a camera to an event like this? I didn't bring lighting or flashes, just a fast lens and an open mind. The images captured were all in black and white and have a slight grainy feel reminiscent of film from years ago. Thank you all who performed for an amazing show and I will be posting images on my site for you to see in the near future. This show opened my eyes to some new styles of dancing and left me, ... well... inspired!

In The Studio

Glenn is very much an on-location photographer, but he also has a studio where he takes photos as well. It's nestled inside an art gallery, Master Source Art, that also has a framing business on site. I've seen many of his studio portraits, and they're awesome... I've seen everything from maternity to belly dancers and everything in between (my favorites have been family portraits and the toddlers).

The Master Source Art gallery where the studio is located has a wide variety of art to browse, I spent quite a bit of time just looking and taking it all in.

Glenn's studio is centrally located in Las Vegas and it's a very comfortable place to meet anyone's portrait needs - and the bonus? A framing business onsite to professionally (and beautifully) frame your new set of portraits.

What Sets Us Apart...

While re-designing the wedding section of our web site, I decided to add a page talking about our services and I titled it "What Sets Us Apart". On that page I give a brief synopsis of our services and started to mention what I feel we do differently from our competition. This got me thinking this weekend while processing images from a few weddings that we have recently covered and I must say I am very proud of our product! We offer our clients a refreshing approach to Wedding photography. We give our clients a very easy choice to get Exactly what they want from us. We don't force them into a "package" that they don't want or give them products as filler to make it seem like a great offer. We offer a fully customized experience that my recent clients have celebrated and I feel we will earn their return business as their Life-story expands because of this. We just recently, in 2008, adopted this way of client-customization that I must give credit to one of my mentors Bruce Hudson for giving me the base ideals to work from. I was very fortunate to attend one of his seminars in late December and taking from what I learned, I morphed his teachings along with what in my heart I knew clients would want and here we are today! I do believe we are distictly different and I love that we are!

A day at the pool...

I had the pleasure of working with one of my favorite models the other day and we decided to do a "lifeguard" shoot as she is a lifeguard for the city. She brought all of the necessary lifeguard gear and we began shooting early in the morning. I had one of my close friends holding a reflector and helping with the shoot in general (it was her first time helping me and I think she had a blast seeing first-hand how I do what I do). Xia (the model) is a natural beauty that I discovered a few years back, and during this shoot she just naturally worked into great poses and I can predict her going as far as she wants to in modeling! I then had Xia change into a black hand-made crochet swimsuit for some more images! All in all, I would say one of my favorite shoots so far in 2008! Look at some images and tell me what you think!

A Monday Wedding to Remember...

As a photographer, here in Las Vegas, I do cover my fair share of Weddings but on Monday i was very fortunate to cover the Herro Wedding. The whole group of family and friends was from out of town and they were all very nice and easy to capture, but the Bride and Groom were very personable and exceptional clients! I enjoyed covering their reception so much, I offered to take them out to the "infamous" Las Vegas sign and shoot some newlywed images after the reception had ended. They really wanted to, but didn't have a car... so I told them I would personally drive them there and shoot and then return them to their hotel after shooting. They quickly agreed and off we went...

The Death Valley Experience... PART 3

After waking at my campsite in Furnace Creek, i decided to drive toward Zabriskie Point to shoot some morning Photos. On the way there I saw this amazing dead and weathered tree in a field. I had to stop and admire it and decided to take a few shots...

Then I did end up at Zabriskie Point, but missed the "sunrise shot" that all of the park rangers had told me was spectacular. It was still a magnificent location and really still majestic and beautiful. I didn't walk away empty-handed, and managed to capture this while i was helping other visitors by capturing them at this amazing landmark.

After Zabriskie, I headed toward Badwater. This is a very popular spot and the sign marking the 282 feet Below sea level gets alot of attention by visitors so I couldn't resist laying my camera on the boardwalk for a self-portrait...

You didn't think I was going to post it did you? :) Above is on the salt flats walking toward Telescope Peak (the snow-capped area in the background). After there I saw a sign for "Devil's Golf Course" and the road went into the salt flats valley. I had to see what a Golf Course made for the Devil would be like so I decided to take the drive. The salt crystals there were amazing and very pronounced! The landscape, even though only a few miles away, was Very different from Badwater. The formations are very solid and jagged and seem to go on forever into the horizon.

From there I decided to take Artist's Drive (a one way loop that has some very colorful scenery). Along the loop is a turn-off for Artists Palette. This place was just breath-taking! words can't describe....

While still on Artist's Drive I saw this bright yellow patch of flowers that stood out in the rocky terrain. I stopped to admire them and had to take them with me... well in images! They were beautiful and thoughts of them kept me smiling on my drive!

From there, I began by journey back to Las Vegas and while driving, I took time to reflect on the 2 day trek to Death Valley and all of the amazing places within the park that I was fortunate to visit and hope to return soon to see some of the treasures I missed on this trip.

Shoot ideas are brewing...

While at one of my favorite Thai bistro's, I started coming up with some great project ideas that are very specific and definately will be fun to develop into shoots. I will be narrowing the ideas down in the next week or two and hope to get to shooting them before I leave for Oregon and Alaska in June. One concept I am developing is a Homage to the pinup images of the 40's and 50's and mixes in a Vegas poker theme. I have a great location and models lined up, so I am now working a storyline for distinct roles each model will portray during the shoot. Well, my plate of Pad Thai awaits, so I will stop typing and start eating...

The Death Valley Experience... PART 2

After Scotty's Castle, a park ranger recommended that i visit Ubehebe Crater, and since it was only a few miles off the beaten path, i decided to check it out. It was definately worth the extra miles! Here is one view from atop the rim, looking down and into the crater:

The surrounding landscape around the crater was covered in black volcanic rock and looked very surreal. From there, i traveled to Stovepipe Wells and took a few shots of the Dunes close to there from the highway. Seeing the Dunes gave me some ideas for some upcoming shoots!

From there, I decided to travel across the park for a chance to capture Dante's View at sunset. This trek was up a very wild and winding road, but the view at the top was incredible. From atop of Dante's View, one can see the entire salt flats below and look across the vast valley at the snow-capped Telescope Peak. To make this view even more spectacular, some light clouds were forming right at sunset. I shot many images and here below are 2 favorites:

While atop Dante's View, i met an astronomer named Ted and he lat me view Saturn and Mars and several constellations and indivudual stars through his telescope after i had packed up and was getting ready to go to my campsite for the night. Based on this experience, i took out my camera at my campsite and attempted to capture some stars, as the sky was alive as far as the eyes could see. Here below is one of my attempts at the Big Dipper: (no photoshop and i was guessing exposure times)

A fun shoot in the Sun...

I was getting the mail one day a few weeks ago, when i saw a new face in the neighborhood getting her mail. She was very much a Rockabilly Girl and i had to ask her to shoot! We had originally arranged to shoot at Death Valley when i as there, but she wasn't feeling well and postponed ~ 'till this morning! We went to one of our neighborhood parks and with Ernie (her husband) helping with lighting, we managed to capture some really cool images! She also convinced her friend Ana to shoot ~ Ana is very pretty but VERY shy! So, after some convincing, she also went in front of the lens and i am glad she did. While we were shooting, I came up with another shoot that i proposed to Danielle and she agreed! So.... I will be doing a 3 girl Pinup Poker shoot in May! The Death Valley Experience... PART 1

I really had a great time in Death Valley over the weekend. I was able to see almost everything I had planned to see in the 2 days I was there. My trip started outside of Death Valley in Beatty and nearby Ghost-town "Rhyolite" (my favorite Ghost-town) with me shooting away...

Then I went into Death Valley and went straight to Scotty's Castle. Along the way in the middle of the road, there was a beautiful coyote walking like it was his highway. I stopped and slowly got out of my car with a zoom lens and got within 50 feet of this magnificent desert creature and captured a few amazing shots before it started getting closer...

I got back in the car and proceeded to Scotty's Castle. I spent over an hour admiring the architecture and the intricate detailing on the buildings, gates, and doors. This was one highlight to Death Valley and i am glad i went "out of the way" to go see it.

Glenn has a really good eye for beauty and bringing life to print, take a look around here and you'll see some of his inspiration. He's asked me to be a regular contributor, providing insight from the outside of a photographer's eye, and I'm happy to be here!

Some exciting news...Glenn is going to have an exhibit at MASTER SOURCE ART coming up soon, with several photos as canvas prints being on a rotating display. I actually got to see some of the photos and pick some of my favorites, and I can't wait to see the finished product!

Glenn is making some changes to his wedding photography services and used me as a guinea pig. I can tell you if I were in the market for a wedding photographer now, I'd hire him in a minute. His style is unique and he's able to capture all the traditional moments as well as truly show the excitement and beauty of the day in photos. There's nothing cookie-cutter about him and his images show it. I learned something as well - there are so many choices for photo print paper! There's this PEARL photo paper that just makes the photos look so beautiful, and there is specific paper for true black and white photos. I had no idea... all I knew of was glossy and matte?

A two day Photo Journey to Death Valley and Rhyolite

I am off for a 2 day photo-journey into Death Valley and the surrounding area. I am going to be shooting as much as possible using my ZUNE for a soundtrack! I plan on capturing as much of Death Valley as i can in the time i am there and have a Model joining me tomorrow for some "Rockabilly" and "Asian" themed shooting! i will be keeping a paper journal while i am there and will post the "Highlights" from that with some images when i return. For now i will leave an image from Rhyolite (my favorite "Ghost-Town").

Signs... they are all around but do we take the time to see them?

Signs are all around us and usually we as a society are usually unaware that they are there or why they were put there. i look even deeper to this theory (maybe too deep) but see everyday situations and experiences for more than what they are and more for the sign that they represent. I spent the good part of saturday evening shooting physical signs and reflecting on the experiences and realizing that signs are so apparent sometimes that we look right through them, and sometimes the most hidden and obscure signs are the easiest seen. The photo here is one of me with my favorite sign in Las Vegas. sure, there are fancier and more hi-tech and amazing signs out there, but this one is my favorite.

A day of Learning and Fun

Even the most seasoned photographer can learn new "tricks of the trade" and i spent an entire day being schooled o stuff that has blown my mind! WPPI is in town this week and i had an opportunity to attend a seminar by Kirk Voclain from Louisianna and get Hands on Training at Redrock Canyon as he opened my eyes to some new concepts and then blew my mind with workflow techniques that made my head spin! This is my second seminar in 2 months (the first one was with Portrait Photographer Great, Bruce Hudson! Enclosed in this post is an image from my "hands on" learning experience. post comments and let me know what you think! There was NO FLASH used in this image, just one reflector and natural light and it was shot at 11AM in direct sunlight! also there was VERY LITTLE after editing in photoshop. Sometimes i amaze myself and this is definately one of those times!

Damn, i would hire ME to take my picture... and You should too! :)

I went on a quest for wildflowers in the desert...

and i was sucessful! I read about a place called Amboy Crater in California (which i have never heard of before) at 10:30am on saturday and decided to head out for the 188 mile journey by 11:30am. Equipped with a case of water and some pistachios and teriyaki beef jerky (and of course my camera gear) i was off. About 3 hours later off of I-40 on Route 66 i approached this magnificent view... a dormant volcano that first erupted over 6000 years ago and has erupted as recently as 500 years ago. All around the ground was lava rock and ... TONS of wildflowers! It was an incredible sight and well worth the drive. There were fields full of beautiful yellow blooms and patches of purple clusters along the lava hills. I took the full tour, hiking to the top rim of the volcano to discover the crater that was deep and jagged with a base of of lava rock. I sat on the rim for about an hour and a half, just looking down at the fields of gold and lavender and deep in thought. Finally i descended the side of the dormant tower and walked through the fields of flowers taking in their intense aromas and beauty as the sun took it's final bow in the western sky. While on this journey, i found a few precious moments of clarity and felt so fulfilled on my way back to Las Vegas driving down a desolate stretch of route 66 with just the sliver of moonlight and an occasional car passing in the other direction... thinking to myself, WOW! Another great expierience chalked up to spontaniety! I am going to be in Death Valley for the first weekend in April, and hope the blooms there are just as magnificent! more on that trip and a BIG trip to Oregon and Alaska for 18-20 days... coming soon!!!

March is Here and so are the new Postcards and Business Cards!

The new business cards and postcards have been designed and i got them back from the printer the other day! i had a really tough decision with 2 layouts for the postcards and decided to get both. I am adding both images and would love your comments. I love the new direction that i am heading in and getting the cards back from the printer and starting to get them in circulation is motivating me more in that direction. I have many more topics to discuss, so keep checking back as i will be updating alot in the near future!

when I last posted, I had envisioned going through some of my wedding images from the shoots the weekend before for my new advertising campaign. Then I decided I also wanted to go through some images from some recent weddings too. Well, let's just say I wasn't the most organized with disc (image) storage. So, in keeping with my "New Year, New Image" theme, I spent the entire weekend organizing all of my image storage disks along with a very detailed spreadsheet! It was a huge undertaking that I can say is over 90 percent done. I have been saying for years that it needed to be done and finally, it will be. So... all this week I will be picking my wedding images. I will keep you posted!

Working with new Pro Lab for Incredible image output!

Today's blog is about Great News! I have been searching for what seems like forever to find a Pro Lab with a large variety of output solutions to meet both the needs of my clients and myself and that has great customer service. This may seem like an impossible task, but then add a cost/value factor in and now it is like finding a needle in a haystack! I am happy to say, however, that I feel like I have found that needle! The New Lab offers a Wide Variety of papers, sizes, and custom services ~ all at a great price! I am very excited and know that my customers will appreciate the quality and value that this Lab offers.

On another note: I have been going through the images from the 2 wedding shoots from last weekend as well as some weddings I have recently shot and am narrowing down the images for my advertising campaign! I am very excited, as this will be my first public media launch! I will have the final image selection done by Sunday and when I get proofs back from my graphic designer, I will post them!

Well, it has been a crazy weekend of shooting for some new advertising images! I plan on getting them out in the public as soon as possible and am really excited about the shoots that were just completed for this project! the models were great and i had alot of help from a good friend of mine with lighting and setup/teardown of shooting areas. He even saved a treasured Wedding Veil from blowing into the Bellagio Fountains (with a little help from a tree). I am in the editing process now and hope to have proofs to the printer very soon! I am also working on a banner ad for this blog for my website so more people can stay in tune with what i am up to! if you are reading this and can design banners, please email me at: glenn@beyondpairadice.com and let me know as i am swamped with editing images and would love help or feedback on a killer banner ad!

well, I didn't plan on going to the dmv, but since I was close I decided to renew my license. This weekend I have two shoots planned. Both are wedding themed and for some new advertising I plan to release soon! saturdays shoot is at a private rental property in SE Las Vegas and sundays shoot is scheduled for the LV Strip! Weather is supposed to be a factor for both shoots but I have backup plans just in case. I will be using 2 different models as brides and the same groom for both shoots. I have some strong image ideas in mind and can't wait to see the end resulting ad published. I also have a few other shoots coming up and I am in the process of coming up with ideas to make them Reality soon. More on that later... My dmv number is next so.... Until next time...

How to start a blog, what to say, what pressure! Actually, I will start with why I will be blogging. I got a new phone (the palm centro) and it had this blogging site on it, along with the capability of blogging to the site directly from the phone. Very Cool! so as a new year begins, the direction of my photography is evolving and I want to keep a record of this evolution. This blog may not be the smoothest read, but I plan on using it as a tool for professional growth and to inform my friends and family of what is going on (especially when I am traveling, which I plan on doing a lot more). As of now. I am planning for a trip to Alaska in june with a quick stop in Portland to visit with family. That is it... My first Blog. I survived!
